Classic Cranberry Sauce

Ma’am, put down the can. Thanksgiving can be stressful as it is, so it seems only natural to want to take a little help from the store and pick up a can of pre-made cranberry sauce; but there’s no need to buy the canned stuffed anymore, because with just 3 ingredients, and 2 minutes of prep time, you can make it from scratch!

Cranberry Sauce, also known as, “The Forgotten Thanksgiving Side”. It’s just one of those thing that you feel like you have to serve on Thanksgiving. I don’t care if the whole family is allergic to cranberries, it still makes it’s way on the table.IMG_7234

Growing up, I thought the cranberry sauce was the best part though!

“Jello? For DINNER?! Can it be Thanksgiving EVERYDAY?!”

I never once thought it was weird passing around a plate with a jiggly red tube of cranberry substance on it, but once I got older, I discovered that it was indeed possible to make your own homemade cranberry sauce, and it was a ton better! No wizardry involved, just 3 ingredients that you throw into a pot, and 15 minutes later, you’ve made your own jiggly, red, cranberry substance!

Every year I like to play around with different flavors; like adding in fresh jalapeños and lime juice, maybe some diced apples and cinnamon, or swapping out the orange juice for apple cider!  You can even adjust the consistency by cooking it less, adding more liquid, etc.

Instructions
  1. Combine cranberries, sugar, and juice into a medium sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer for 15 minutes, or until all of the berries have bursted, and the sauce it thick (almost like jam consistency). If the sauce seems too thin, just simmer it until it's the right consistency.
  2. Stir in the orange zest and store in a container in the refrigerator until cooled, or overnight. This can be made a few days in advance.
Recipe Notes
  • Once the cranberry sauce chills overnight, it will get very thick and gelatinized. If you want a thinner sauce, reduce the cooking time by about 5 minutes, or add a splash of extra juice (up to a cup total of liquid).
  • If you want to mimic store-bought cranberry sauce, omit the orange zest and replace the orange juice with cranberry juice or water. Cook as directed, and puree in a food processor or blender until smooth. Pour into a mold and chill overnight in the refrigerator.
  • If you like chunkier cranberry sauce, add in only half of the cranberries in the beginning, then add in the rest halfway through the cooking time.
